This piece began as a 100-word story that got a warm rejection from Five Minute Lit: While “Five Months” wasn’t ultimately accepted, our readers had good words for the piece, including “well written” and “beautiful work.”
It took many forms after that and was rejected 26 times before the final version earned the RUNNER UP spot in READ Magazine’s summer 2024 Creative Nonfiction Contest:
